Blog EntryMy Bestfriend's Girlfriend's Product PlacementsFeb 21, '08 5:57 AM
for everyone

The stars of "My Bestfriend's Girlfriend", Marianne Rivera and Richard Guiterrez, may have had the jampacked theater and my date swooning but it was the product placements that really got my attention.

After previously experiencing a grating Biogesic placement while watching Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz's "One More Chance", I couldn't help but notice the following brands among others during our date last Sunday:

    Hershey's Kisses
    Dunkin Donuts
    Yellow Cab
    Mr. Softee Ice Cream

I don't think the Ducati appearance was a placement (I think it was just used to add much needed character to Richard Guiterrez) but it was very prominent in the movie.

Hmmm...it's either I'm becoming too ADdicted or product placements are just becoming more pervasive in movies.

Bart Simpson certainly knew how to rebel with style. In the spirit of his "Eat My Shorts" attitude towards life, here are the finalists to the Nokia Cinemaiksi 1st Philippine Advertising Congress Festival. I know that finding these online is long overdue since I last posted about Nokia Cinemaiksi but there's still time to bet on your favorites that break the rules of traditional film making before the grand finals in Subic where they will be shooting new short film entries. For the meantime,  take a pick and try to guess which film maker will win it. So eat my shorts. Or rather, their shorts.

All the Nokia Cinemaiksi short film entries were shot using a Nokia N95. For more details on these short film entries, visit the Nokia Cinemaiksi YouTube site at http://youtube.com/NokiaCinemaiksi.

If there are still doubts regarding the viability of YouTube as a mass medium, surely, the latest gamble by the Queen of Talk totally obliterates these uncertainties. In an unprecedented move four days ago, Oprah set up her own channel on the online site featuring clips from her show. This makes Oprah perhaps the first prime-time and mainstream television celebrity to acknowledge and embrace the power of YouTube. Once again, she proves that when it comes to communication, she is always a step ahead.

Blog EntryShort CutOct 22, '07 2:53 AM

My Art Director partner and I had a short but exciting break from work last Friday when we represented our agency, Aspac/Law, as guests in Nokia Cinemaiksi. This short-film making challenge, featuring teams from different ad agencies, was held at the G Hotel Manila last October 19 to 20. After listening to speakers that included Jim Libiran (who won Best Picture in Cinemalaya for Tribu), we had the whole night until morning to shoot and edit a 60-second short film. The twist was that we could only use the Nokia N95 cellphone, which has very powerful multimedia capabilities.

Here's the quickie
we produced entitled "Bayani":

I've seen similar quizzes before but this is the first time I realized how this could be very effective and engaging material for digital media advertising. Something like -- who you would be if you were a music artist for iPod; which Desperate Housewife you would be to launch the next season of the show; or what mobile phone you would be for Nokia. The possibilities are endless.

Blog EntryWowoweenameAug 29, '07 2:30 AM

After weathering what could be considered as a public relations crisis management nightmare, Wowowee is in the hot-spot again.

Check out this link to Trueasiatiktribe featuring an exhaustive debate on Willie Revillame's involuntary unveiling of the "dark secret" to one of the game show's latest segments:

http://trueasiatiktribe.multiply.com/reviews/item/3

Ignore the nonsensical and off-tangent commentaries. Regardless of how many people Wowowee has helped throughout its airing -- the fact remains that the primary reason that they do it is to earn money as well. Television programming is a business after all. Just like advertising!

But just like advertising, it has responsibilities and ethics to consider too!

Blog EntryBest Originally Plagiarized AdaptationAug 27, '07 9:47 PM
for everyone

And the winner is...Nuts Entertainment!

I was watching Nuts Entertainment last week and I was appalled to see a game segment that was so much the same as a Japanese TV show my creative team had watched over youtube a month ago.

Click here to see this ridiculously intelligent show -- http://youtube.com/watch?v=0bK63uSTTNs or search youtube.com for human tetris.

Filipinos have always played up their so-called creativity but I guess our reputation for "adapting" concepts and tv shows from other countries is also well earned.

The least that the "creative minds" behind the show could have done was give credit to the Japanese show they had so proudly "emulated".

Because they didn't do anything of that sort, I dare say that what they did was downright plagiarism! Much like ads lifted from award books!

Are we really going nuts?!
