Years ago, there was an ATP ad campaign called "New Balls Please" which featured the future stars of the sport. This was what came to my mind when I watched the recent Australian Open Finals.
Considering that the heated rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal was showing no signs of cooling down, practically everyone expected that the Australian Open Finals would feature the top two tennis players in the world - even the corporate sponsors. No wonder that the following Rolex and Kia ads featuring Federer and Nadal continuously aired during the Aussie Open broadcast in Star Sports.
The only thing was that when it came down the line, the Australian Open finals did not feature any of these two players. Surprisingly, the championship duel was between Novak Djokovic (ranked 3rd in the world) and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (previously ranked 38th, now ranked 18) - both of whom respectively sent home Federer and Nadal in straight sets during the semi-finals.
Even more surprising, the new pair displayed a magnificently powerful tennis match that could be considered a classic in the history of the sport with Djokovic eventually winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6.
Will we be seeing Djokovic or Tsonga ads in the future? Only their performance in future games will tell.
