Yes, it can happen. There is a chance that the content you upload to YouTube can end up in mainstream media. Take the example posted in adgoodness about a commercial made by Nick Haley, an 18 year old English kid who made an iPod Touch ad that was seen and liked by Apple people so much that they ended up buying the rights to it. The original amateur YouTube version of the ad is on top while the Apple-produced commercial is at the bottom.

With the democratization of information and even media through the Internet (i.e Wikipedia, Youtube, etc.), it isn’t surprising that there is also a site called OpenAd that promises the same for Ad Creatives.

Self-proclaiming itself as “The World’s Biggest Creative Department”, OpenAd enables Creatives to submit their ideas for whatever product they think of, to participate in pitches for briefs that are posted by clients, and even to join online Creative contests.

I tried registering to activate my account since its free but the hang-up is that you have to print-out their “contract” and mail it to them in UK (which I won’t do yet until my next salary from the agency I work at, ironic isn’t it) Anyway, I think all the perks of OpenAd membership may be worth the trouble and expenses.

But don’t dismiss OpenAd as just a Creative-friendly network. It also gives clients the tempting option to ask Creatives worldwide to pitch ideas for campaigns at very reasonable costs. If their web ads are true, imagine having over 9,000 Creatives worldwide at your disposal. (Now that seems like the wrong expression from a Creative to describe the Client Relationship with a Creative.)

If this trend gains momentum will this mean another cut in the ever-decreasing agency share of advertising budgets? Or will this be the end of freelancers? Or will this be just another avenue for Creative side-line projects?
